Lyceum’s Faculty of Safety and Criminal Justice is at the forefront of training and education in the field of public safety. The role that disaster and safety management plays in society cannot be underestimated. Major catastrophes worldwide have accentuated the importance of disaster management i.e. to safeguard and protect human lives and property. Occupational Health and Safety is also a sensitive issue, which in the industrialised environment precipitates certain risks that may affect negatively on society. The primary role of agencies and individuals specialising in disaster and safety management is to cope with disasters within a predetermined framework. These agencies and individuals coordinate and plan for natural and man-made disasters. In essence, this means a working relationship with all relevant public sector agencies and non-governmental organisations at national, provincial and local levels that include the police, emergency services, public health officials, charities and numerous private agencies. The development of professional practitioners in the field of disaster and safety management is a pre-requisite to ensure that the country copes adequately with disasters and industrialised incidents.

Many practitioners in both the private and public sectors may want to acquire a formal qualification in disaster and safety management to augment their performance in this specialised field. Disasters are an increasing international phenomenon acquiring the assistance of all role-players involved, irrespective of culture and/or borders. Recent international disasters are a practical example of cross-border assistance. Safety in the workplace is of equal importance, as the health and economical system of the country may be affected, especially in the event of major incidents. This necessitates international cooperation, liaison and information sharing. This programme is developed to focus on these issues. The Bachelor of Arts in Disaster and Safety Management is an NQF – level 7 programme that has been developed to provide learners with specific knowledge and competencies to ensure that graduates are prepared for the challenges of a career in this exciting and specialised field. Lyceum College is a leading provider of training to the law enforcement fraternity and the addition of this programme is seen as a natural extension of its services to practitioners in a closely related profession.

Upon successful completion of your qualification, you will receive a certificate depicting: – Bachelor of Arts in Disaster and Safety Management and an academic transcript. These documents will be issued at the annual graduation ceremony or couriered to the nearest branch provided that your account is in order. NB: Certificates cannot be issued to the students before a graduation ceremony. The student’s responsibility is to ensure they meet all the qualification requirements before issuing a qualification.

The minimum entry requirements for the Bachelor of Arts in Disaster and Safety Management are:A National Senior Certificate (NSC) with bachelor’s degree endorsement, orA National Certificate Vocational (NCV) at NQF Level 4 with bachelor’s degree endorsement, orAmended Senior Certificate (ASC), with bachelor’s degree endorsement, orA Senior Certificate (SC), with University Exemption (bachelor’s degree endorsement), orForeign School leaving Certificate that complies with minimum admission requirements for bachelor’s degree study as gazetted by the Matriculation Board (The Matriculation Board will do equivalency evaluation)Alternative admission requirements:A Diploma or Advanced Diploma in a cognate disciplineSenate discretionary admissionMature Age (23 – 45 years of age)Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)Candidates over the age of 23 at registration or during their first year of attendance who have attained a Senior Certificate with at least 40% in at least four Higher Grade or Standard Grade subjects, at least three of which were passed simultaneously, one of which is a Higher-Grade subject, and one is English. Conditions apply.Additional Requirements:Foreign applicants whose first language is not English, may be required to provide proof of proficiency in English prior to admission to the programme Age exemption certificates must be attained from the Matriculation Board before admission can be granted. Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) processes and Credit Accumulation and Transfer (CAT) are articulation mechanisms. The institution reserves the right to conduct a formal assessment for purposes of CAT. An evaluation will be conducted to recognise prior learning. This evaluation may or may not be based on a form of formal assessment and can include a portfolio of evidence submission. These mechanisms are in line with the HEQSF as envisaged in the NQF Act 67 of 2008 and the CHE “Policies on the Recognition of Prior Learning, Credit Accumulation and Transfer, and Assessment in Higher Education” published by the CHE in August 2016. The final approval for applications in respect of CAT and RPL is subject to academic vetting in terms of applicable legislation and institutional policies.
